From the Overwatch Community: Thank You, Bill Petras
As an Overwatch fan—and someone who also spent time in World of Warcraft and Firefall—I was heartbroken to hear of the passing of Bill Petras. While his name may not have always been front and center, his work touched nearly every part of the Blizzard universes we’ve come to love. He didn’t just make games. He built worlds.
I played WoW back in the day and got lost in Azeroth like so many others, but Overwatch is where I’ve stayed. And knowing that Bill helped shape both of those experiences means something deeper now. His art direction didn’t just make games look beautiful—it made them feel alive.
The Senior Art Director and His Journey
Bill Petras—real name William Petras—was most recently the Senior Art Director for overwatch 2, and a core part of the team that helped shape the Overwatch universe from the ground up. He focused heavily on building the tone and atmosphere of the world, from the way maps feel to how stories are told visually. He also contributed to the animated shorts that introduced many of us to this universe in the first place —the ones that made us fall in love with the characters long before we ever queued for a match.
But Bill’s journey didn’t start there. He first joined Blizzard back in 1997, during a time when the studio was just starting to build its legacy. Over the years, his art helped define the early identity of games like StarCraft, Warcraft, and Diablo, and his visual storytelling laid the foundation for Blizzard’s cinematic style. He also worked on Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm, bringing the same care and creativity to every corner of the Blizzard multiverse.
Firefall and Overwatch
Between 2005 and 2010, he stepped away to help create the MMO Firefall at Red 5 Studios—a game I personally enjoyed and was sad to see go. When he returned to Blizzard in 2010, he helped guide one of the studio’s most important transitions: the shift from Titan (the cancelled blizzard project) to Overwatch. That spark of something new? That optimism? Bill helped give it shape. ✨
He retired in 2021 after nearly two decades with the company—but he wasn’t done creating. In 2023, he co-founded a new game studio with other former Blizzard devs, continuing to do what he loved: build worlds. The project hasn’t been revealed yet, but knowing Bill’s legacy, it was no doubt something imaginative and inspiring.
Tributes including Overwatch´´Petras Act´´

And like any great worldbuilder, Bill left pieces of himself in the games—little tributes that players can still discover. In World of Warcraft, there was added tribute to him in the shape of Watcher Petras, an NPC quietly standing guard in a corner of the world he helped create. Now Watcher Petras can forever watch over the beautiful world Bill Petra helped create. In Overwatch, there’s the Petras Act, a piece of lore named after him. And if you look closely in places like King’s Row, Petra or Château Guillard, you’ll spot Petras-brand champagne tucked into the scenery—small details with big meaning. 🥂

His longtime friend and former colleague Harley D. Huggins II put it beautifully:
“Billy was an amazingly gifted artist… I will miss our regular, long, rambling conversations about life, game dev, games, art, comic books, toys, monster movies and Conan.”
To many of us, Bill Petras was a name we might’ve seen in credits but never realized just how much he shaped the experiences we’ve loved for years. His work brought joy, wonder, and imagination to millions—and for that, we’ll always be grateful.
Thank you, Bill.
For Overwatch, for WoW, for Firefall, and for the worlds you gave us.
Rest easy. You’ll always be part of the game. 💛
RIP 🙁
